Am 17. Oktober 1989 erschütterte ein Erdbeben der Stärke 6.9 die Bucht von San Francisco. 67 Menschen starben, es entstand ein Sachschaden von 5 Milliarden US-Dollar. Das Beben war das stärkste und verheerendste, das jemals eine Wohngegend in den Vereinigten Staaten getroffen hatte.
On October 17, 1989, a magnitude 6.9 earthquake hit the San Francisco Bay Area, killing 67 people and causing more than $5 billion in damages. The disaster was the most powerful and destructive quake ever to hit a populated area of the United States.
Fukushima
Am 11. März 2011 ereignete sich ein Erdbeben der Stärke 9,0 in der Nähe der Pazifikküste von Tohoku. Es war das viertstärkste jemals gemessene Erdbeben. Es verschob Honshu, Japans Hauptinsel, um 2,4 m nach Osten und verlagerte die gesamte Erde entlang ihrer Achse zwischen 10 und 25 cm. 15.894 Menschen starben, 127.290 Gebäude kollabierten. Das Erdbeben und der daraus resultierende Tsunami führten in drei Reaktoren des Fukushima Daiichi Atomreaktors zur Kernschmelze der Stärke 7. Die notwendig gewordene Evakuierung der Bevölkerung betraf Hunderttausende. Ein Großteil von ihnen kann oder will nicht mehr in die ehemals atomar verseuchten Gebiete zurückkehren.
On 11 March, 2011, a magnitude 9.0 earthquake occurred off the Pacific coast of Tōhoku. It was the fourth most powerful earthquake in the world. The earthquake moved Honshu, the main island of Japan, 2.4 m east, shifted the Earth on its axis by estimates of between 10 cm and 25 cm. 15,894 people died, 127,290 buildings collapsed, earthquake and tsunami caused the level 7 meltdowns at three reactors in the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant complex, and the associated evacuation zones affecting hundreds of thousands of residents, many of whom can’t or don’t want to return to their formerly through atomic energy infested homes.
